Hanukkah, Festival of Lights, is observed from the eve of the 25th day in the Jewish month of Kislev. Observed in remembrance of the miracles that took place in the time of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. The miracles include the successful revolt when the few Jewish Maccabee soldiers defeated the mighty Greeks. After the revolt there was no oil to be found to light the temple menorah. After searching, a small jug was discovered. The amount would have been enough for just one night, but a miracle occurred and the oil burned for eight days, until a new batch of olive oil was pressed. Hanukkah lasts for eight days. Every night (except Friday night) candles are lit in a special candelabrum called a menorah. Time is spent celebrating together with friends and family over parties with traditional foods that are baked and fried in oil. Everyone is included in the traditional dreidle games and presents are exchanged enhancing the jubilant atmosphere. At Judaica Unlimited you can shop for all your Chanuka necessities.
