The most jubilant and action packed day in the Jewish calendar. Commemorating the annulment of the decree to eliminate the Jewish people in the ancient Persian Empire, it is celebrated on the eve of the 14th day of the Jewish month of Adar. The story is read from the Book of Esther, Megilat Esther, where the tale is recorded in detail, how the evil Haman plotted and persuaded King Ahasuerus to kill all Jews from his empire. The plot was miraculously foiled by Mordechai, Queen Esther’s uncle. When the name of Haman is mentioned, noisemaking is customary with graggers. The day of Purim was set as a day of celebration for all future generations. This merry day is celebrated by dressing up in costumes, festive banquets, trading food & gift baskets and handing out charity to the poor.
